Antelope Island, Great Salt Lake, UT, 17 February 2014 – Here are a few more images taken at last year’s Antelope Island Moonlight Ride on 19 May 2013. Before the ride a few local kids participated in a BMX bike demonstration. A little off our normal road bike track but fun images to view.
Salt Lake City, UT, 26 December 2013 – The Salt Lake Tribune named Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill their Utahn of the year today following his almost instantaneous announcement that Salt Lake County would honor Judge Shelby’s order immediately invalidating Utah’s constitutional ban on same-sex marriages. We agree whole-heartedly with his selection.
Of all the public figures and civil right groups who should have been present for this historic change, Sim Gill was the man who was front and center Friday and all day Monday at the Salt Lake County Offices. Other groups who should have been leading this charge at every key moment over the past week were very clearly not doing so. Yet, the man of the hour, the man of the year more appropriately, Sim Gill who is likely documented in the thousands of photographs of this key event was never far from assuring the rights of the people were maintained at all times as the process of democracy progressed through his jurisdiction.
Salt Lake City, UT, 23 December 2013 – My line companions have said they were waiting to be together for 5 years before tying the knot. Four days short of that goal they decided it was time to act. Whatever our purpose for being here each of us has our own personal reasons for being here. The most important today is to show we share similar need for companionship and love no matter the subject of our attraction.
Salt Lake City, UT, 23 December 2013 – Preparing for the moment in a personal expression of individuality couple number 60 wait in line with the growing crowd. Couples around us are celebrating 5+ years together appear nervous and anxious. Sometimes finally getting what you’ve wanted for so long comes with bittersweet finality.
Salt Lake City, UT, 23 December 2013 – Two separate lines began forming late Sunday night as hopeful same sex couples queue up to apply for marriage licenses in the 18th state to make such unions legal. Hopeful couples slept in tents and under layers of blankets in hopes that the State is not successful in its appeal. With each line claiming to be first potential for conflict existed. A good friend, Nate and I, tried speaking with the groups to integrate the two lines to alleviate any issues. The sheriff’s sergeant, John Neron, was friendly and as helpful as he could officially be but told us they were counseled not to support in any form. After explaining to the groups that we should work together a fellow applicant, Isaac Troyo, found small cards to number. There are two sets of numbers with each set expected to line up with their number partner. Greg and I will be number 57 or 58 in line this morning. Good luck to our fellow alternative families today.
Ogden, UT, 21 December 2013 – Nearly 500 people, some crying for justice, are turned away from the County offices moments after calls were made confirming the licenses would be issued. County officials came to the doors to announce they would not issue licenses today as was the case in Davis and Salt Lake counties. All offices are scheduled to open Monday at 8 am for usual business. The state is apparently attempting to block issuance of the marriage licenses before it can request a stay from the courts.
